Introduction

 

The LoRaWAN gateway is a device that connects your IoT devices to the internet. What is LoRaWAN?

It was originally developed in the Netherlands by a private company as an alternative to WiFi when a longer range was needed. When you want to send data from one device to another, you have to set up a connection between the two devices. This connection can either be over Wi-Fi or over LoRaWAN. If it’s over Wi-Fi, the device will have to be connected to your WiFi network, and if it’s over LoRaWAN, the device needs to be connected to a LoRaWAN network.

 

How does the LoRaWAN Gateway work?

 

The LoRaWAN Gateway is a device that can be connected to the Internet. It can be a computer, a router, or a specially designed-gateway device. The LoRaWAN Gateway is connected to the Internet and to the LoRaWAN network. The LoRaWAN network consists of other LoRaWAN gateways and the devices that are connected to these LoRaWAN gateways. The LoRaWAN gateway connects the LoRaWAN network to the Internet. When a device connected to the LoRaWAN network wants to send data to another device connected to the LoRaWAN network, it first sends it to the LoRaWAN gateway. The LoRaWAN gateway sends the data over the Internet to the LoRaWAN gateway of the device it wants to receive the data. The LoRaWAN gateway of the receiving device sends the data back to the original gateway. The original gateway sends the data back to the device.

 

Traffic between devices and gateways

 

The devices that send and receive data don’t connect directly to each other. The data travels between the devices and the LoRaWAN gateways that are connected to the Internet. The devices don’t even know that there is a LoRaWAN network, and they don’t need to know. Most of the time, the network between the devices and the LoRaWAN gateway will be a regular Internet connection. But if the connection between a device and a LoRaWAN gateway goes down, the device will automatically start communicating with the other device through the LoRaWAN gateway. And even if a LoRaWAN gateway goes down, devices will still be able to communicate with other devices through other LoRaWAN gateways that are connected to the Internet.
